Manufacturing Quality Engineer I

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY: The Manufacturing Quality Engineer I for LaCrosse Footwear Inc.'s (LFI) Danner manufacturing facility resides in LFI's Quality Department. This position will be based at LFI's Danner Portland manufacturing facility and be assigned full-time to a manufacturing shift as determined by Sr. Manager of Quality and Commercialization. The Manufacturing Quality Engineer I primary responsibility will be to work with manufacturing, under guidance of the Sr. Mngr of Quality of Commercialization, to ensure all Danner footwear products are built to Danner's high-quality standards. This role will also ensure the manufacturing facility follows established quality initiatives, testing protocols, established inspection plans for materials/finished products, manage quality data, conduct root cause analysis, communicate/implement corrective/preventative action plans, and quality issues.

Qualified candidates will address engineering/process/product issues relating to quality, processes and components while consulting with Manufacturing/Pattern Engineers and Production on manufacturing impact to implement creative and long-lasting solutions.


  • Quality Assurance/Leadership Responsible for working with manufacturing facility under limited direction to ensure all footwear products are built to Danner's high-quality standards. Can effectively identify the root cause of a quality issues, measure impact, develop experiments, analyze solutions, use statistical techniques to provide solutions and able to help lead, complex initiatives across multiple departments when necessary. This will be performed using quality analysis and reliability engineering technologies.
  • Quality Testing Perform testing with footwear laboratory equipment to make certain products meets or exceeds quality standards. Can communicate test results and provide recommendations to meet internal and external quality standards under little supervision. Build and develop statistical sampling plans for raw materials, new product development, and finished product testing. Developing new test methods as needed to ensure end user is receiving high quality product.
  • Quality Inspection-Oversee and/or perform inspections of footwear components, WIP, and finished goods by ensuring that all components are within specification and developing courses of action if components are out of compliance. Identifying opportunities to reduce inspection cost or improve inspection by building and developing statistical sampling plans to ensure high quality product are shipped to the customer.
  • Data Management, Reporting, and Communication Compile data, generate reports, make recommendations, and implement solutions for quality and production teams to improve product. Must be active participant in all quality and manufacturing programs leading solutions across multiple departments. Provide feedback identifying areas of improvement by well documented, efficient, and effective communication to a wide range of stake holders.

  • Desire to learn ISO 9001 Quality Management System eventually conducting internal audits to ensure the company meets ISO standards and other standards of compliance.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering field required and 0-5 years in a manufacturing environment.  
  • Working knowledge of Six Sigma preferred.
  • Working knowledge of LEAN manufacturing and 6S principles preferred.
  • Experience working in quality environment preferred


PC skills required, experience using an MRP system preferred.


Based in LFI's Danner Shoe Manufacturing's Portland, Oregon facility. Position will be located in a factory environment.


This position reports directly to the Senior Manager of Quality and Commercialization.
